At just 17-years-old, Timothy Pawson, a Jbay Academy High School Grade 11 student, has already made waves in the powerlifting scene, demonstrating remarkable talent and determination in his journey from novice lifter to regional and national champion.
Pawson’s interest in powerlifting began a year ago, sparked by his realisation of his own strength during workouts at his local gym. What started as a casual interest soon transformed into a passion, as he discovered his natural ability in lifting heavy weights.
With no formal coaching, Pawson began to hone his skills and push his limits. Two months ago he entered his first competition at regional level, where he secured first place with an impressive total weight lifted of 410kg.
Undiscouraged by his lack of a coach, Pawson set his sights higher, aiming at competing in nationals. He competed in three categories, Squat, Bench-press, and Deadlift, at the event held in Edenvale, Johannesburg, lifting a staggering 450kg in total.
His performance at nationals not only earned him a gold medal, but also allowed him to achieve the title of the new sub-junior SA champion in the 120kg weight class.
Pawson aspires to break records and represent his country on the world stage for powerlifting.
“I’ve achieved this goal all on my own, without any coach or someone training me, by training in a local gym with friends after school, so that just shows that with dedication and motivation you can do anything if you just don’t give up and keep on going,” said Pawson reflecting on this experience.
Pawson has extended his gratitude to Stuart Hoile, Quen Nortje and Leslie Kettledas, as well as his parents, his brother, and the unwavering encouragement from his loved ones, giving all glory to God for his success.
