FULL-TIME: Kaizer Chiefs 1-5 Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns delivered a resounding 5-1 victory against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium, securing their seventh consecutive DStv Premiership title.

Tashreeq Matthews (two), Matias Esquivel, Lucas Ribeiro, and Thembinkosi Lorch found the net in the second half, securing all three points for the Brazilians.

With this victory, they solidified their position at the top of the log, ensuring that they cannot be caught.

This marks their 17th overall championship (14th in the PSL era), achieved with six games remaining.

The Tshwane team now aims to conclude the season unbeaten in the Premiership.

02 May 21:27

Ribeiro turns provider again as he dinks a perfect cross for former Orlando Pirates forward Lorch to hit the final nail in the coffin with a headed finish.

02 May 21:25

94' GOAL! GOAL! GOAL!

02 May 21:24

Ribeiro rubs salt in the wounds of Chiefs with a stunning low finish.

90' GOAL! GOAL! GOAL!

02 May 21:19

Mduduzi Shabalala confidently converts from the penalty spot after being brought down in the area, with the referee promptly awarding the foul and signaling for the spot kick.

02 May 21:17

84' GOAL! GOAL! GOAL!

02 May 21:17

Matthews completes his brace. Silkly football from Sundowns splits open the Chiefs back four with ease. The Cape Town-born forward, who arrived at the club in January, does his best with clinical finish past Bvuma.

02 May 21:15

81' GOAL! GOAL! GOAL!

02 May 20:53

The floodgates are now open. Esquivel gets his first Sundowns goal since arriving at the club during the January transfer window with a bit of luck from a Ditlhokwe deflection.

HALF-TIME: Kaizer Chiefs 0-0 Mamelodi Sundowns

02 May 20:14

40' Since going down a player, Chiefs have put in a valiant defensive effort to keep the scores goalless.

02 May 19:54

Upon review, it's clear that Msimango's challenge clipped Ribeiro's heels, warranting a free kick. However, whether it merits a straight red card or a yellow is debatable.

Since Ditlhokwe was also in a defensive position, Msimango may not have been the last defender, complicating the referee Tom's decision.

02 May 19:52

18' DRAMA! Given Msimango has received his marching orders. Abongile Tom has sent the defender to the showers early for a challenge on Lucas Ribeiro.

Cavin Johnson is fuming on the sidelines.

02 May 19:47

15' It has been a slow start to this fixture. Both sides feel out one another, with neither side wanting to make an error. Very tactical but as expected.

02 May 19:39

Sundowns' defensive record this season is remarkable, having conceded only eight goals in 23 games. They are on track to potentially break the record for the fewest goals conceded in a 30-game season, currently held by Chiefs, who conceded 11 goals in the 2003/04 campaign.

02 May 19:37

In the history of their matchups, both Chiefs and Sundowns have celebrated 4-0 victories, with Chiefs achieving this feat in 1987 and 1992, while Sundowns secured their dominant win more recently during the 2022/23 season.

02 May 19:32

1' The well-experienced referee Abongile Tom sounds the whistle to the 80th league tie between Chiefs and Sundowns at the iconic FNB Stadium.

02 May 19:22

It is simple - a victory for Mamelodi Sundowns and they are officially crowned DStv Premiership Champions. However, a defeat means that the champagne remains on ice until further notice.
